More nanny woes
Well, just a little. We gave our nanny a raise last week, and she came back to DH on Monday saying that it wasn't enough, she'd like at least an over 10% raise, since we value her work, are obviously open to increasing her salary. She says going rates in Tor.onto are $450/wk net for live in, and at least $500/wk net for live out. We think the figure for live in is definitely high, and aren't so sure about the live out. If any of you have an idea what a nanny goes for around here, please leave a comment and let me know! Info like gross/net, live-in/live-out, how many hours a week, how many kids, housework or not, metropass or not would be helpful too! For now, we're trying to decide how much to offer her, since we really do like her and our K is very attached to her, but we aren't willing to be totally ripped off either. Hopefully we can come to some kind of agreement.

I hope you can figure out a fair plan. Is there some sort of place you can go to to find out the going rate for that- like a nanny referral place? Tha's the only advice I've got. But man, we pay $243 for a week for BOTH babies to go to daycare. I couldn't imagine over $500 a week. At that rate, maybe I should move to Toronto. I'll be your nanny if Sam and Anna can come with. ;)
We pay about $2000 per month for daycare for two...nannies here were about the same amount plus a few hundred more for taxes for one or two infants.
Even though the cost is about the same for us, we opted for daycare for a number of reasons...one of which you are going through now (feeling extorted, being held hostage, emotional drama)! Good luck!
Oh Kate, that really sucks...after all that guidance you gave us, we decided on a local dayhome that specializes in babies (M will be going for the first time this Friday...) It looks like an amazing place...
Even though we put a posting on CanadianNanny, only 5 people applied - and none of them were suitable. We were so disappointed (but not surprised...not many people want to be off during the summer!)
Good luck with it all...fill us all in on what happens...
Oh, and by the way, we pay $1020/month for the dayhome...a reduced rate for teachers, since we pull our kids during the summer but still have to pay to keep our spots...the ratio at the home is 8 babies to 2 caregivers...
